Generally, children respond much faster and more profoundly to chiropractic care than an adult. Their young bodies have not yet been subjected to years of wear and tear. Another major difference is that pain is not a primary system. This can make it more difficult for parents to know when kids need to visit their chiropractor.
There are certain “clues” that we can watch for to gain more understanding in this area, such as postural changes, only wanting to breast feed from one side, being off-balance, and running with a limp. As mentioned before, the amount of force used and the specific techniques utilized vary depending on the unique needs of individual children and what stage of development they are currently in.
Common Childhood Conditions
Here is a list of common childhood conditions that Chiropractors have been shown to help by treating the children suffering from them and enhancing their overall health.

• Common Cold
• Growing pains
• Bed wetting
• Breastfeeding difficulties
• Birthing Trauma
• Sports injuries (like Little League Elbow)
Here is an example of Hollenbach Family Chiropractic’s recommended Well-Child schedule:

• Every 3 months for the first year
• Every 6-12 months for every year thereafter
Other times to consider bring kids in for an appointment include:
• Major milestones
(starting to sit up, crawl, walk, etc.)
• Any trauma or falls
• If you notice any signs of imbalance
(limping, head tilting, etc.)

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked for Vertebral subluxation complex. Later learning to walk, ride a bicycle, and other childhood activities can cause spinal problems. While a bandage and comforting words can help a skinned knee, the unseen damage to the child's spine is the unique domain of a chiropractic doctor. Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off as "growing pains" can often be traced to the spine. Regular chiropractic checkups can help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults.
The delivery process, especially a difficult one, can adversely affect the infant and cause neurological problems and/or underlying health problems. The birth process places great physical stress on the infants head, neck and entire spine. This stress can cause misalignments in the infant’s spine and possibly interfere with their nervous system function and overall health.
Specially trained chiropractors use gentle adjustments specific to the infant’s spine to remove subluxations (a misaligned vertebra which interferes with the nerve impulse) before they have lasting negative effects. An infant adjustment is gentle, relaxing and therapeutic. The amount of force used to adjust an infant is comparable to the amount of force used to test a ripe tomato or touch your own eye.
